SRP was established in 1903 as the nation's first multipurpose reclamation project authorized under the National Reclamation Act by Theodore Roosevelt. During the construction of Theodore Roosevelt Dam, a telephone line was built along the Apache Trail so that Supervising Engineer Louis Hill could maintain contact with the engineers at the dam site.

Over the years, the internal telecommunication system has expanded to support all SRP facilities across the watershed and the Salt River Valley with fiber optic and cell site assets traversing the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

In 1996, when the opportunity to better serve SRP shareholders and customers through diversification emerged, SRP Telecom launched.

Telecom is an independent business unit of the major entities of which SRP is comprised: the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, a political subdivision of the State of Arizona; and the Salt River Valley Water Users' Association, a private corporation.

The District provides electricity to 2 million people living in central Arizona. It operates or participates in 12 major power plants and numerous other generating stations. The Association delivers nearly 1 million acre-feet of water annually to central Arizona.
